MSE Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

The MSE program seeks highly motivated students with good quantitative skills and excellent English to prepare for careers and advanced studies in economics, finance, data analytics, and public policy. To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the below requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or licensed institution of higher education (or be near completion)

Graduate Standardized Tests

The MSE program conducts an internal assessment of knowledge; thus, standardized test scores are not required for the application. However, the applicant must submit the results of the standardized tests (TOEFL/IELTS, GRE/GMAT) should they already possess them. The required thresholds are the 60th percentile on the GRE or GMAT quantitative section, a TOEFL iBT score of 79, or an IELTS (Academic) score of at least 6.5 If a student is admitted to AUA with any of the official test scores below the minimum targets for the degree program to which they are applying, they automatically get a status “on probation.” This means that the student must attain a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of the first term or be subject to dismissal from the university.

Applicants who meet the below requirements, may apply for a GRE/GMAT waiver.

  • AUA undergraduate seniors or graduates: Grade B or higher in Business Math or equivalent (Calculus 1, Single Variable Calculus, Calculus: Single Variables) and Applied Statistics or equivalent (Statistics, Statistics 1, Probability and Statistics)
  • Seniors or graduates of other universities: Curriculum contained strong foundation of math and statistics and Language of instruction of entire program is English

Knowledge of the English Language

English language proficiency is an essential factor in a successful study at AUA. Thus applicants are strongly advised to ensure a high level of professional English before commencing studies. This can be done through AUA’s English for Enhancement Purposes course (EEP) if needed. These courses are not required but are strongly recommended. For more information on EEP, please email [email protected].

Knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics

Mathematics and Statistics skills are essential for successful studies in the MSE program. Mathematical logic, multivariate calculus, constrained optimization, matrix algebra, basics of probability, and hypothesis testing knowledge will be examined during the internal assessment tests. If a need for refresher courses is identified, the applicants will be required to attend summer courses on quantitative and/or statistical methods.

Knowledge of Economics

While prior knowledge of Economics is an asset for successful studies in the program, it is not required for admission. However, if traditional economics modeling skills (basics of intermediate microeconomics) are absent, the applicant might be required to attend specialized courses.
